Rick Buchanan, President of the US Navy Memorial I'm Rick Buchanan. Welcome to my Personal Scrapbook in the new Navy Log!

I graduated from the US Naval Academy with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1968 (and also played on the Academy baseball team).

I spent the majority of my Navy career serving on submarines, starting on the USS Lapon (SSN-661). Later, I was Engineer Officer on USS Trepang (SSN-674), Executive Officer on USS Lafayette (SSBN-616), and Executivce Officer on USS Ohio (SSBN-726). I was also proud to command the USS Parche (SSN-683) from 1984-1988.

After that, I served in several other roles, including:
  • Executive Assistant to the Command in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Command
  • Commander, Submarine Group Seven
  • Director of Strategic Submarines and Maintenance Division
  • Commander, Submarine Group Two
  • Director of Operations and Logistics, U.S. Strategic Command
After 31 years, I retired from the Navy in 1999 as a Rear Admiral. I spent the next few years in the private sector, first at the First National Bank of Omaha, then EDS and Raytheon, and then joined the Navy Memorial in 2005.
